Fly Drive New Zealand

New Zealand may look like a very small country, but it takes dozens of hours to drive from end to end. If you want to see as much as possible within a short period of time, a fly drive New Zealand holiday is the best way to do it.

What are New Zealand fly drive holidays?

New Zealand fly drive holidays typically include a flight between the North Island and the South Island.

These domestic flights usually travel from Auckland or Rotorua to Christchurch or Queenstown. This cuts out the long drive from Rotorua to Wellington, the ferry ride between Wellington and Picton, and the long drive between Picton and Christchurch–approximately 14 hours of travel in total.

Of course, these packages can also be customized to include different regions depending on personal interests. For instance, if you are interested in New Zealand’s top wine regions, you can fly from Auckland to Blenheim and from Blenheim to Queenstown.

Domestic flights within New Zealand are generally cheap and convenient and can allow for a much more relaxed pace while still hitting the highlights.

When booking a fly drive holiday through us, you also save big on your rental car. Typically, rental car companies would charge you for two separate short vehicle hire periods, each with high daily rates. However, we are able to secure a vehicle hire rate that reflects the total number of days you spend in New Zealand. As the per-day rate decreases the longer you rent your vehicle for, this can equate to huge savings.

Is it hard to drive in New Zealand?

New Zealand roads can be difficult. Firstly, many are narrower than in other countries. Secondly, mountains and hills cover much of New Zealand, so roads across both islands are typically winding rather than straight. And finally, many travelers are not accustomed to driving on the left side of the road.

However, it can be easy to drive in New Zealand if you plan right.

Try to keep distances as short as possible. The maximum speed limit anywhere in the country is 100 kilometers per hour. In addition, you will end up driving slower around corners. When planning your itinerary and route, look at driving times rather than distances.

Cut out unnecessary driving as much as possible. For instance, a fly drive holiday removes the long drive between the North and South Islands. In addition, we recommend booking coach transport for long driving trips such as the Milford Sound cruise out of Queenstown.
