Activity Options

Milford Sound Boutique Small Boat Cruise

Experience Milford Sound the local way on a once-in-a-lifetime tour with Cruise Milford. One of our core values is quality over quantity. We operate our boat at half-capacity, limiting passenger numbers to 75 so you can enjoy an uncrowded and more personal experience.

Our local team knows all the hidden gems around Milford Sound, from the Hanging Gardens and local seal colonies to Fairy and Stirling Falls. Sit back and relax with complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits as you take in the breathtaking views and enjoy your nature guide’s commentary. Our smaller vessel allows you to get up close to the wildlife that abounds in Milford Sound, from resident New Zealand fur seals to dolphins and the rare (and seldom spotted) Fiordland Crested Penguin.

This cruise is suited for all ages and has wheelchair access to the main cabin.

Milford Sound Boutique Small Boat Cruise Highlights Include:

  • 1 hour 45 minute cruise
  • Small boats for a more intimate experience
  • Boats surveyed for 150 passengers but kept at 50% capacity
  • Complimentary tea, coffee & biscuits
  • Locally owned company
  • Fascinating commentary
  • Suited for all ages

Extra details:

  • Wheelchair accessible to the main cabin (please advise if you require mobility assistance)
  • You are welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks along for the cruise

Day Tour from Te Anau

This is the same boutique Milford Sound cruise with a small coach tour from Te Anau included. The Milford Road is narrow and winding, so this is the best way to enjoy the breathtaking views without worrying about the drive.

Travelling in a small coach with a maximum of 16 passengers, the day tour from Te Anau makes at least 12 stops along the way for photos and short walks. Insightful commentary from your guide helps you gain a deeper appreciation for this remarkable part of New Zealand.

This tour is unforgettable in rain or shine. On sunny days, you can see the tops of the near-vertical mountains lining the Milford Highway, while rainy days bring hundreds of waterfalls cascading down every mountainside.

Upon arrival at Milford Sound, board your small boat cruise and enjoy a packed lunch along with the usual tea, coffee, and biscuits. This is a full-day experience returning to Te Anau in time for dinner.

Day Tour from Te Anau Highlights Include:

  • Full-day experience departing 7:30/8am (winter/summer) and returning between 4 and 5:30pm
  • Pick-ups from right outside your accommodation
  • 1 hour 45 minute boutique cruise (as above)
  • Small coach with a maximum of 16 passengers
  • Packed lunch included
  • 12+ stops for photos and short walks
  • Learn even more with commentary from your guide as you drive the Milford Road
  • Suited for all ages

Extra details:

  • The small tour coaches are not wheelchair accessible

Day Tour from Queenstown

This is the perfect way to see Milford Sound in a day trip from Queenstown. It isn’t recommended to drive the full return distance yourself, so a coach tour is the ideal choice.

Beginning with an early pick-up from selected Queenstown accommodations, your small coach tour travels down to the southern end of Lake Wakatipu, pausing for a view back toward Queenstown. From here, continue to Te Anau, where you have a 30-minute break at the Alpine Center Cafe.

The highlight of the tour is what comes next: the drive along the Milford Road and the boutique Milford Sound cruise. As with the Day Tour from Te Anau, this tour makes 12+ stops for photos and short walks, while offering illuminating commentary on the sights.

When you arrive at Milford Sound, join our boutique small boat cruise and enjoy a packed lunch along with the usual tea, coffee, and biscuits.

Day Tour from Queenstown Highlights Include:

  • Departs 6:30am / returns 7:30pm
  • Pick-ups from right outside your accommodation
  • 1 hour 45 minute boutique cruise (as above)
  • Small coach with a maximum of 16 passengers
  • Packed lunch included
  • 30-minute cafe stop in Te Anau
  • 12+ stops for photos and short walks
  • Enjoy commentary from your guide as you drive
  • Suited for all ages

Extra details:

  • The small tour coaches are not wheelchair accessible

Other Information

If you are booking a Te Anau/Queenstown coach tour with packed lunch, please advise if you have dietary requirements.

This tour operates in almost all weather. The only cancellations are due to high wind (around 3x per year) or if the Milford Road is closed.

FAQ

Where do I check in for Cruise Milford if I self-drive to Milford Sound?

You will find a check-in desk at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal. You will need to arrive a bit before departure, and allow plenty of time to park.

What should I wear for the Milford Sound cruise?

Dress in layers, as the weather in Milford Sound can change quickly. Bring a waterproof jacket or rain gear, as Fiordland is a very rainy part of New Zealand. You will also want to wear sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and comfortable shoes.

What else should I bring for the day trip to Milford Sound?

Bring a camera or phone for photos, plus any food or drinks you would like beyond what is provided on the cruise (tea/coffee/biscuits for all passengers and packed lunch for Te Anau/Queenstown day tour participants).

Are there restroom facilities on board?

Yes, both boats have restrooms on board.

Are we guaranteed to see wildlife at Milford Sound?

We almost always see the resident New Zealand fur seals basking on rocks in Milford Sound. However, dolphin and Fiordland Crested Penguin sightings are much less common.

Fiordland Crested Penguins are most often seen in spring and early summer.
