HokitikaHokitika is famous for it’s arts & crafts. Watch a masterpiece being crafted from gold, silver, molten glass, paua, ‘Ruby Rock’ a unique Hokitika gemstone, bone, silk and greywacke or carve your own creation from wood or jade "pounamu". Take in Hokitika’s natural beauty, enjoy it’s expansive beach or one of the many walking and mountain bike tracks. For the more adventurous, take up the challenge of white water rafting or heli rafting. Wilderness heli fishing & hunting are also on offer – track down red deer, thar, chamois, salmon & trout. The Wildfoods Festival in March, attracts thousands of visitors eager to sample the gourmet ‘bushtucker’ on offer, like huhu grubs, westcargots, mountain oysters, emu & West Coast whitebait to name a few. Kiwis can be viewed at The National Kiwi Centre as well as tuatara, giant eels native birds & native fish. Shantytown is a re-created 19th century gold rush town showing life as it was, where you can ride the steam train & pan for gold! Oh and don’t forget that round of golf on one of NZ’s few Golf Links courses! |
