About Doubtful Sound and Fiordland National Park

Located deep in the heart of a World Heritage Area, Doubtful Sound is an overwhelming place. Feel the power of nature, the remoteness, wildness and peace.

Doubtful Sound is often referred to at ‘the Sound of Silence.’ Here you will find serenity and tranquility that contrasts Milford Sound. Like Milford Sound, this fiord is rich in flora and fauna, including fur seals and Fiordland Crested penguins.

At a depth of 421 metres, this is the deepest of the fiords in Fiordland National Park. The fiord is long and winding, with three arms and numerous waterfalls. In fact, Doubtful Sound is three times longer and 10 times larger than Milford Sound.

Plan your visit

Doubtful Sound is only accessible on a tour, because no road leads directly to the fiord. Choose from day cruises or overnight cruises, or experience the fiord up close with a sea kayaking adventure.

Your trip begins with a cruise across the stunning Lake Manapouri. After that, a coach carries you over Wilmot Pass, pausing along the way to take in the dramatic scenery.

At last you reach Deep Cove, where your cruise through the fiord begins.

A day cruise offers a rewarding glimpse of the fiord, from the meandering arms all the way out to the open ocean. Meanwhile, an overnight cruise provides an even more immersive experience, with breathtaking views and a true taste of the remote serenity of Fiordland.
