Alpine Recreation Lake Tekapo – Summer Trekking & Winter Ski Touring and Snow Shoeing
Tekapo Trek
- Hike above worry level in the foothills of the Southern Alps.
- Be inspired by the magic light of the Mackenzie High Country across golden tussock, snow-capped peaks and the turquoise of Lake Tekapo.
- Climb Beuzenberg Peak (2070m) and return to a cosy mountain hut to savour the sun setting behind mountain silhouettes and a star-studded sky – one of the clearest and darkest skies in the southern hemisphere.
- Previous tramping or hiking experience is recommended, minimum 2, maximum 10 participants.

Snow Shoe Tours
Lake Tekapo High Country 3 days Snowshoeing
- Snow shoeing based at our comfortable Rex Simpson Hut high above Lake Tekapo.
- You hike along a ridge to the summit of Beuzenberg Peak in the Two Thumb Range, giving grand views across the Mackenzie Basin and to Mount Cook.
- Off the Main Divide of the Southern Alps the Two Thumb Range has very favourable weather conditions, providing the ideal venue for easy snow shoe touring. Suitable for fit hikers or trampers.
Departures and Duration
Trips start 9am Day 1 at the Alpine Recreation office, 30 Murray Place, Lake Tekapo with gear outfitting and finish 3-4pm on Day 3 back at the Alpine Recreation office.
Nordic & Cross Country Skiing
Lake Tekapo High Country Ski Touring
- Back-country skiing based at our comfortable Rex Simpson Hut high above Lake Tekapo, you undertake day tours in the rolling basins of the Two Thumb Range.
- Off the Main Divide of the Southern Alps the Two Thumb Range has very favourable weather conditions, providing a choice of terrain for either easy to moderate cross-country skiing and Telemark touring or alpine touring on the steeper slopes.
- Cruising on skis over rolling hills and along snow-filled valleys, carving telemark turns down virgin slopes, convivial evenings beside a pot belly stove in a cosy mountain hut, the peace and serenity of the white wilderness – these are the ingredients of a memorable mountain holiday.
- Subject to snow conditions. A high level of fitness is required. Suitable for beginner to advanced skiers. Prior tramping or hiking experience essential. Minimum 2, maximum 10 participants per guide.
Departures and Duration
July – September by arrangement. Trips start 8am on Day 1 and finish 5-6pm on the last day. You can book 2 days or up to 6 days.
Other Information
- Book well in advance as peak season times are often booked up
- Please allow extra time in case you are held up in the mountains due to weather
- As our equipment check takes place at 8am on the morning of departure, you need to book accommodation in Tekapo the night before (see Lake Tekapo Accommodation)
- After the tour/course, it is recommended to overnight in Tekapo again (see Lake Tekapo Accommodation)
